Intermittent fasting (IF) is all the rage these days isn't it. I don't really get it, but intellectually I can understand it...from a species POV. After all, humans weren't designed to eat all day long. Evolution tells us that humans ate when they found food and they ate a ton of it. Which is why the modern human is fatter than the pre-Industrial Revolution human...supermarkets and fast food everywhere make eating how we were meant to eat nearly impossible.
Unless you are me. Or other folks living in rural areas. I live three miles from the nearest grocery store and I don't own a car. I walk there once a week to pick up groceries for the week. Walking forces me to shop smart because I can only carry what I need on my back. I haven't owned a car in seven years and it's the best decision I ever made.
Anyways. Intermittent fasting advocates promote eating lifestyles such as 18:6, 16:8, 14:10, and 12:12. Others are more radical and suggest not eating every other day. Excuse me? Even the most primitive human would have eaten some twigs or dirt. Give me a break. I went a few days without food one time and I was the embodiment of the devil. My family hated me. It was an experiment. And you know what else? I broke out like crazy; I put on three pounds of fat two days after the fast. Not because I indulged or overate, either. My body literally held onto every morsel of energy I provided it (it was probably thinking this might happen again!).
I would never do that again. Bad decision. For some folks it works, but not for me. However, I have been reading more on intermittent fasting and I am intrigued. Mostly because I want to drop that smidgen of belly fat still hanging around from my surrogacy. It's not much, but it is enough to make me think about it.
To see if I can force my body to drop a little fat, I am going to try IF for one week. Starting on August 26, 2016. I can't do it this week because I am going backpacking into the wilderness and don't feel like restricting myself on a 35 mile hike. So next week. You should join me.
My plan is to perform a 14:10 fast. For 14 hours, I will not eat and for 10 hours, I am permitted to eat. I've chosen this ratio because my schedule doesn't make sense with the 16:8 fast, nor do I want to screw up my hormones...I've read too many studies and first-person accounts of women and fasting to even attempt this.
Since my schedule is different, i.e., I am up at 4AM every morning, I will be eating breakfast. But after that, I am not putting restrictions on when I eat. I just stop at 6PM and repeat. Most likely, I will eat breakfast and an early dinner with some fruit or nuts somewhere throughout the day.
Hooray for experiments. I would love to see others jump on board and post comments about their experiences trying IF.
